Hip hop culture is an ever-evolving way of life. It includes many elements, from DJ's and rappers to graffiti artists and boys. Fashion and the many hip-hop brands are another important element. Each city developed its own style as the culture spread across the country. These styles are still prevalent today. Urban fashion reflects the attitude of the culture, and has become more mainstream over the years.


It all began in the 80's, when DJ's and MCs wore sneakers and bomber jackets, tracksuits, and gold chains. Fashion was a major aspect of this era and was often used in songs and rhymes. This was also a time when African American nationalism was extremely influential. Many wore hip-hop brands that resembled African influence, including the Pan-African colors, which are red, green, and black Hip Hop Apparel.


Many fashion trends came and went in the 90's. This fashion became more mainstream and was worn by more hip-hop brands. The bright, neon-colored, oversized clothing of the early 1990's was a popular choice. As a testament to the culture, many wore their clothes reversed. Sports brands quickly became very popular on the urban streetwear market. Some brands of sneakers and apparel for sports teams started to become popular. The throwback and current professional sports team jerseys became very popular during this period. Throwback jerseys were expensive and in short supply due to high demand. In the 90's, many people began to imitate gangsters from the 30's and 40s by wearing double-breasted suits, silk shirts, and gator shoes.


Many music artists began their own hip-hop brands, which are still very popular today. This is still a popular trend. Artists are now using this opportunity to promote their brands as they realize how influential they can be. Celebrities and musicians heavily influence hip hop fashion in the 2000's. Fashion brands with high status are wearing older styles from the 80's and 1990's to show their wealth. Although it's hard to predict the future of hip-hop fashion, there are many things we can look forward to in the next decade.
